Is your child finished swimming lessons? Looking to continue in this field? At the Waegwoltic they can! We are continuing to offer Swim patrol, Bronze star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, Junior Lifeguard and Synchronized swimming. "New" last year, Â we are also introducing the Assistant Water Safety and Water Safety instructor courses for those who may someday want to teach swimming.
Swim Patrol
This course offers three "sub levels" (Rookie, Ranger and Star) each working on H20 proficiency, First Aid Skills, recognition and rescue. These skills get gradually more and more advanced as you move through each level.
Bronze Star
Not a prerequisite for Bronze Medallion. Recommend minimum of 11 years of age to participate. Bronze Star is a two-week program that is taken as a preparation course for students who intend on taking the more advance bronze courses and eventually the NLS program.
Bronze Medallion
This one-month course is for those participants 13 years of age, or those who have completed Bronze Star. Bronze Medallion is the first step in training to become a lifeguard and teaches students the four primary components of water rescue education which are as follows: judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Students will train to become rescuers through learning such skills as tows and carries and to care for conscious and unconscious victims. All students will be tested physically through a variety of fitness tests.
Bronze Cross
1 month course, and participants must be 14 years of age and hold current Bonze Medallion. This is the second step in training to become a lifeguard. This is finally course needed before students are able to register for NLS (National Lifeguard Service). During this class students will learn more advanced rescue and first aid techniques. They will also begin to be introduced to the topic of how to provide safe supervision in an aquatics environment/
Junior Lifeguards
Offered twice a week for 8 weeks (session 1 – 4). Participants will gain valuable first aid and lifeguarding skills, get experience shadow guarding, and prepare to represent the Waegwoltic club at a Jr.Lifeguard competition during the summer.
Synchronized Swimming
Introduction to basic synchronized swimming. You must have your swim kids 5 badge and be comfortable in deep water to participate. Synchronized swimming is the perfect sport for children who love being in the water. This activity resembles dancing in the water and students will work towards presenting a synchronized swimming routine. Synchro at the Waeg is a great intorduction to the sport and will allow kids to be active, while also combining team-work and creativity!
Assistant Water Safety Instructor (AWSI)
This course is a prerequisite for WSI and the first step in becoming a swimming instructor. AWSI will run for 2 weeks. You must be 14 years of age and have completed all your swimming levels or the equivalent. Throughout this course students will learn the basic instructional skills which include: various teaching methods, different learning styles, proper communication skills, safety supervision and how to deliver appropriate feedback.
In the later stages of the course, the students will begin practice teaching here at the Waeg. Together, with the help of the Waeg Swimming instructors, these students will have the opportunity to put what they have learned into action. Once they have completed this course students will then be eligible to take the Water Safety Instructor course.
Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
This is the final step in becoming a swimming instructor. WSI will run for 2 weeks, You must be 15 years of age and have completed your AWSI. This course takes what the students have learned in AWSI and further shape that knowledge by focusing on how to properly plan and teach the Red Cross Swim Kids program. Students will focus on learning new drills, and corrective strategies, as well as, stroke development and how to properly respond to any emergency that may occur during lessons.
If students are successful in completing this course then they will be fully certified Water Safety Instructors and as such, are able to teach any of the courses that fall along the Red Cross Swim Continuum.
