2011 Sailing Awards

The following are a list of Summer Awards given annually to our top sailors in the Youth Sailing Program at the Waegwoltic. As a club, we would like to congratulate the recipients of these awards for a job well done!

Northwest Arm Trophy

The Northwest Arm Trophy is awarded to the top sailor in each session of the Basic Sailing class. This year's recipients quickly mastered basic boat handling skills and the fundamentals of seamanship on their way to becoming confident sailors. More importantly, their excitement and love for the sport of sailing was evident to their instructors and fellow classmates.

Northwest Arm Trophy July 2011 Recipient:  P.J. Smith

Northwest Arm Trophy August 2011 Recipients: Ethan Black & Paul Ghosn

James McPherson Memorial Trophy

The James McPherson Memorial Trophy is awarded to the top sailor in each session of the Advanced Sailing class. Recipients of this award built on the techniques learned throughout the Basic Sailing levels and mastered new skills such as trapeze and the spinnaker. Furthermore they demonstrated exceptional abilities in larger, faster boats and in conditions much more demanding than seen in Basic Sailing.

James McPherson Memorial Trophy July 2011 Recipient: Charlie Moore

James McPherson Memorial Trophy August 2011 Recipient: Max Gross

Optimist Race Team Top Sailor Trophy

This trophy is awarded to the top sailor on the Optimist Race Team. The Optimist (or Opti) is consistently the most popular boat at local regattas as it introduces beginners into the world of competitive sailing. This year's recipient demonstrated exceptional boat speed and handling as well as tactical knowledge. This young sailor not only achieved the Club's record for top finishes at local regattas on this team, but also at highly competitive events such as the Canadian National Optimist Championships held, this year, in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

2011 Optimist Race Team Top Sailor Trophy Recipient: Elias Hirsch

420 Race Team Top Sailor Trophy

This award is given to the top sailor on the 420 Race Team. This team is designed for those who wish to take the skills learned in the Advanced Sailing Program and use them in a highly competitive racing environment. Recipients of this award are either crew or skipper of the Club's top finishing boat at local regattas, competing against experienced racers from across the Maritimes.

2011 420 Race Team Top Sailor Trophy Recipient: Colin Clarke

Waegwoltic Cup

The Waegwoltic Cub is the oldest of the Waegwoltic Sailing awards. This cup is awarded to the top sailor on the High Performance Race Team. This year's recipient demonstrated exceptional sailing abilities as the Waegwoltic Club's top racer in the Laser Radial class at both local and national regattas. This sailor has developed and mastered both advanced boat handling skills as well as racing theory, and was able to excel in even the most challenging of conditions.
