History

The Waegwoltic was founded in 1908 and was known as the "Bloomingdale". The name "Waegwoltic" was taken in 1910 from a Mi' kmaq name meaning "end of the water". (Apparently the name the Mi' kmaq's gave to the Northwest Arm).

The Waegwoltic was purchased by a group of businessmen back in 1908 to provide a recreational and social club that would be owned by the members. It was to be a family Club and would specialize in three main areas of recreation: swimming, tennis and sailing. The Clubhouse was built in 1861 and was the summer residence of Mr. A.G. Jones, Lt. Gov. of Nova Scotia. The dining room end of the Clubhouse was built after the Waegwoltic purchased the property. In that first year of the Club, there were 350 members. Today the Club has approximately 6500 members.

The Club is a place of history with a present, past and future.  Few Clubs in North America have had almost 100 years of continual operation with the same goals and values as this one.

We have always specialized in swimming, tennis and sailing (in early years "quoits" was a popular sport here at the Waeg).  This year we are providing more activities for the Club members which includes beach volleyball.

The Waeg has always provided a safe, clean, efficient, friendly and courteous social/recreational environment. This is all realized with early morning swims, dining in very pleasant surroundings with good food, tennis matches and teas. Here we meet people with common interests in swimming, tennis or sailing. There has always been a community mentality encouraged. New member receptions, adult dances, pre teen dances and new this year, a family dance all add to the social environment. Generations after generations have embraced the Waeg as an integral part of their formative years, childhood  to adulthood. Following this they enter into a family life of their own and the circle of life begins all over again.
